BROWN  BEAR  HUNTING

Spring brown bear hunts in the Alaska range are done out of a cabin with the use of snow machines to get to various places to glass from. We are typically looking for bears just digging out of their den. The stalk is made on foot or snowshoes depending on snow conditions. On average your best chance to get a big bear is in the spring. Mature boars in this area will  be from 8 ½ to 9 ½ feet. The skull sizes aren’t quite what we get in Yakutat but have gotten some 25” skulls. It is an enjoyable hunt, usually with pretty nice weather. Cold nights and long sunny days.
Fall hunts in the Alaska range are spent mostly by watching salmon streams, sometimes it’s a large area sometimes a small brush lined stream where 25 yards is a long shot. You generally see more bears in the fall than in spring but it’s harder to get the big ones. On the spring and fall hunts roughly 4 out of 5 clients will be successful.

Yakutat brown bears

These bears get big. The average size on a spring bear is over 9 feet with some as big as 10 feet. Some of these skulls will go over 28 inches. According to the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game this area has one of highest bear populations in the state. Last fall I took a guy and his wife brown bear hunting. They kept track of the different bears we saw so as not to count the same one twice. He shot the 71st bear that we saw, it was 9’ 3” then another bear went by while we were taking pictures. These hunts are running at about a 90% success rate, with some years being 100%. This is a good area in the fall for those who want to take a bear with a bow.
